2685 - 3623 OLD and RARE BOOKS
- One map loose; bookplate on upper pastedown.
- Velvet completely worn away (sm. remnants only visible at foot of spine) and underlying cl. w. damaged spots; joint split. The goldwork in splendid condition, without any significant wear.
= A remarkably fine example of luxurious eighteenth century gold bookdecoration by the Amsterdam(?) goldsmith Johannes van Leuven (1737-1782), with his hallmark and yearmark 1761. SEE ILLUSTRATION PLATE XCIX.
- Silver oxidized; some small parts loosening.
= A rare example of a remarkable delicate kind of binding with very refined silverwork decoration. SEE ILLUSTRATION PLATE XCIX.
- Lacks (2?) textlvs. at the end; first and last few lvs. worn/ frayed in fore-edge margin, (sl.) affecting text; modern endpapers. Binding oxidized; backstrip worn (from polishing?).
= Nice binding, without hallmarks. The text on the central medallions reading "Aus wahrer Lieb kombt dieser Trieb" (frontcover) and "Nur dise bahn führt Himmel an" (backcover); the images i.a. showing Christian symbols. SEE ILLUSTRATION PLATE XCIX.
- Bookplate on upper pastedown.
- Chafed and rubbed; upper joint splitting at spine-ends.
= The catches with an unidentified hall mark of a swan. With manuscript owner's entry to "Johanna Clazina Hesselink" decorated w. floral watercolour drawings, dated 1804.
AND 1 other 19th cent. full calf binding w. engr. silver clasps and catches, sm. 8vo.
- Upper hinge broken; first lvs. loose(ning); sl. foxed. Binding w. some worn spots.
AND a late 19th cent. bible w. silver clasp and catch.
- Oxidized and worn (from polishing). Nevertheless nice. = SEE ILLUSTRATION PLATE XCIX.
- Narrow waterstain in outer margin; spine bookblock glued to backstrip.
18th cent. sharkskin binding, with 2 silver chiselled clasps and catches w. simple shaped ornaments, all edges gilt and gauffered, - ON: BIBLIA: DAT IS, DE GANTSCHE H. SCHRIFTURE (...) (Dordr., 1740-43, 4 parts in 1 vol.).
- Recased, w. the upper margin cut short. Backstrip dam. and repaired.
= The silver is hallmarked, Amsterdam, 1747 and by the silversmith Bastiaen or Barent Yserlo.
- Backstrip dam./ chipped at top of spine.
- Remnants of former bookplate on upper pastedown. Spine and corners sl. rubbed. A fine copy.
= Bound for Adelaide of Saxe-Meiningen (1792-1849), Queen of the United Kingdom and wife to William IV, with an AUTOGRAPH MONOGRAMMED DEDICATION in pen and ink on first free endpaper: "For Anna & Aurelia from their (?) Aunt, A.D. 1839". Binder unknown. With the bookplate of G.H. (Georges Hugnet?) on verso first free endpaper.
- First free endpaper w. contemp. dedication. Extremities sl. rubbed.
= Clasp w. nice cut-out clover design and engr. decorations reminiscent of rocaille. Catches engr. in the same style.
- Contents trifle foxed. Covers chafed/ dam.
- Lacks the pencil. Otherwise fine. = SEE ILLUSTRATION PLATE C.
- Silk sl. age worn. Top of spine chipped.
AND 2 other ballbooks, both 2nd half 19th cent., i.a. one bound in black lacquer binding w. silver gilt floral decoration in centre of frontcover and along margins, 9x6 cm., leather spine, interior lined w. purple moiré silk and w. loosely inserted booklet in matching silk, a.e.g. (lacks the pencil, otherwise fine).
- Bookplate on upper pastedown. Joints weak at spine-ends; top of spine sl. worn.
= With pencil annot. attributing the fine binding to L.-A. Boyet (1685-1733).
- Both covers w. dam. spots from acid-biting (sl. affecting gilt border and central ornament); spine-ends and 1 corner restored w. leather. Owner's entry and stamp on first free endpaper. Nevertheless a desirable copy in a rare and remarkable binding.
= Large paper copy. Storm van Leeuwen (IIA, p.448) mentions a copy of the same work with ident. binding (C 1245/ fig. 182) that "may have been a present given by the authorities of the island of Voorne, bound by order of the publisher, Pieter van Waesberge." - Spine-ends sl. worn; corners showing. A good/ fine copy.
= Bound by royal bindery B.-L. Deflinne (Tournai) for Van Ewyk (gilt text on frontcover "présenté à monsieur Van Ewyk"). Cf. Koninklijke Bibl., 187 K 14 (same binding and work, bound for King William I of the Netherlands).
