From the series of Basketry Work: By the Craftsman Ichida Shôshichirô of Naniwa. Probably designed in autumn 1819 when an exhibition of basketry was held in the Ryôgoku district of Edo.

Manuscript in Nasta'liq script, Persian, early 16th cent., (209) lvs., 4 columns to a page between line-borders in blue and gold, 4 delicate headpieces w. geometrical and floral decorations in colours and gold, 6 MINIATURES IN COLOURS AND GOLD, contemp. brown leather w. three blindst. floral central ornaments on both covers.

- Bookblock and quires loose; all lvs. (partly) strengthened along margins (occas. w. sm. tears along margin); all miniatures occas. w. small pigment losses; probably lacks some lvs. at end. Rebacked; dam. along edges.

= Provenance: from the library of E.J. Bullrich w. his gilt mor. bookplate on lower pastedown; with a carbon copy catalogue description in Spanish "Comprado a Maggs Brother en 1924"; a clipping from an exhibition catalogue ("Fiche catalogo Exp. 1945 Salon [...?]" and a catalogue clipping in English (w. the price in guilders). A famous and popular text describing the feats of Alexander the Great during his Oriental campaign. The catalogue clipping states i.a.: "The style of the miniatures clearly shows that they were executed by someone of the school of Herat and influenced by the famous painter Behzad. One of the most interesting of the miniatures is the one which shows a doctor at work trying to revive a fainted patient, in the background a traveller attacked by tigers (?) (...)." Opaque watercolour, ink and gold on paper, sky area partly coloured in silver and partly in blue, central miniature (18,5x12,4 cm.), surrounded by two borders: inner border consisting of gilt floral decoration on a darkblue ground, outer border very richly decorated with flowers, flowering plants and birds, 32,4x23 cm. (incl. borders), painted on gold flaked paper, framed.

- A few (undisturbing) old restorations in borders: in upper right corner (patch of 2x2,5 cm. of the floral border restored) and left of center a closed tear; in left margin: a few (partly closed) sm. tears; both vertical borders surrounding the inner border were apparently corrected at upper and lower end but are still vaguely visible (in lower border to the left of the peacock there are some faint sl. darkened traces of the correction); a few minute tears in outer ochre coloured plain margin surrounding the richly decorated floral border on three sides; 2 tiny wormholes in sky area, a few tiny wormholes in floral border. Not examined outside frame, but prob. mounted along margins.

= Interesting miniature, in the style of the famous Shah Jahan album miniatures, with the detailed drawings of flowers and birds in margins. SEE ILLUSTRATION PLATE LVII.
