The first part of the volume (...) describes the marriage customs of all parts of the world, pages 171-230 being devoted to Africa (...)." = Johannes in de Betouw (1732-1820) was archaeologist and lawyer, who, like his forefather Johannes Smetius, did much research on Roman and Germanic history and on the general history of Nijmegen. He published a great number of works. Gijsbert Cornelis (1765-1805) was his son ("Hij werkte veel met zijn vader samen, zoodat vele werken van deze ook op zijn naam staan. Dat is mogelijk, daar de meeste naamloos verschenen. Intusschen is het wel zeker, dat de vader de voornaamste hand in dien arbeid heeft gehad." (NNBW)).
