= First edition of Aurelius' three works Defensorium, Elucidarium and Diadema imperatorum edited by Vulcanius. This edition was the foundation of the 17th century Batavian myth, the belief that the Dutch people were direct decendants of the Batavians. The Batavian myth enabled the architects of the Dutch Republic to (re)invent a nation with a heroic past and forge a compelling narrative of the Low Countries as a political, moral, and cultural community united (against tyranny) by their long-standing love for freedom. Four vols. were published (De Wind p.219, no. 2-5) and were later published together with a new general title Historiae Batavorum (...): "Ofschoon deze geschriften zeker aan Bockenberg den naam van geschiedschrijver niet konden verschaffen, is het echter jammer dat zijn groot werk, waar van wij straks melding maakten, en waar aan hij jaren lang gearbeid had, niet in het licht verschenen is. (...). Bockenberg trachtte historieschrijver van Holland te worden, en werd dit in 1591, in weerwil van Dousa, die ijverig, maar vruchteloos, voor zijnen vriend Baudius om dezen post verzocht had." First part of a work Bockenberg meant to combine into a single large work on the History of Holland, Zeeland and Friesland, a work he never finished.
