76/1871 Vondel, J. van den (1587-1679). "Vredewensch aen Constantyn Huigens, ridder, heere van Zuilichem, raed en secretaris des princen van Oranje." AUTOGRAPH POEM SIGNED "Juste", pen and ink, 1 fold. leaf (33x42 cm. unfolded), recto only, title/ dedication and 36 lines, dated "Augusto 1633" by C. HUYGENS in upper right corner (p.1) and autogr. address to Constantijn Huygens ("Edelen gestrengen heere Constantyn Huigens ridder heere van Zuilichem Raed en secretaris des princen van Oranje tegenwwoordigh in het leger/ loon den bode (...)" w. paper seal (p.4).

- Flattened folds; page w. the address and seal sl. soiled and w. "XII" in red crayon.

= Fair copy, w. 2 autograph corrections. EXTREMELY RARE autograph by Vondel (in the past 60 years no autographs have come up for sale at auction). This is one of two autograph copies of the poem known to exist: the other copy was sent to Tesselschade by Vondel and is kept in the collection of the University Library of Amsterdam. Vondel wrote the poem "Vredewensch" in response to Huygens's question whether he still wrote poems in praise of Frederik Hendrik. Earlier Vondel had written several poems glorifying the achievements of Frederik Hendrik in the Eighty Years' War, such as "Verovering van Grol" (1627) and "Zegezang" (1629), but quite unexpectedly he answered Huygens' question with his wish for peace: "Vredewensch". In the poem he calls on Huygens as secretary of Frederik Hendrik to move the prince to peace. Interestingly, 13 years after writing his "Vredewensch" (on the eve of the Peace of Westphalia and just after Frederik Hendrik had died), Vondel wrote his poem De getemde Mars, in which he returns to his frustration at Frederik Hendrik's unwillingness to participate in a peace treaty, with the words: 'op wiens hart geen vredewensch kon hechten. For the history and background of the poem, see in extenso the essay "Vondels Vredewensch aen Constantyn Huigens (1633) als bijdrage tot een aktuele diskussie" by Mieke B. Smits-Veldt in Spektator (see Literature below). In this essay Smits-Veldt mentions the existence of three copies of the autograph, but the second copy, of which only an illustration was known, proved to be a partial reproduction of the present copy, on which she writes: "Het derde handschrift, dat figureert in een Franse auctiecatalogus van 1878, moet hoogst waarschijnlijk inderdaad de tekst van de Vredewensch bevatten, gezien de omschrijving "Pièce de vers aut. signé Juste, adressée à Constantijn Huygens, Août 1633". Of de datering "Août 1633" berust op een datering in het handschrift is niet duidelijk: de andere twee[sic] dragen geen datum. (...) Volgens De Vries en Unger zou dit sinds 1878 "ergens in het buitenland zwervende" handschrift het exemplaar, bestemd voor Huygens, geweest zijn; wellicht vanwege de aanlokkende toelichting in de catalogus? Helaas is ook dit handschrift nog niet opgespoord." SEE ILLUSTRATION PLATE LXXIV.

76/1873 [Zeeland]. Michielzen, M. (±1630-1684) (attrib.). Consilis Machielsen. Pensionairis ordinair der Steede Veere". Manuscript on paper, pen and ink in Dutch, dated "1749 Schripsit[?]" at the end, 170[=172]p., contemp. hcalf w. red mor. letterpiece giltlettered "MACHIEL / STAAT / NOTUL / IN RYM", folio.

- Some foxing in blank margins. Spine-ends sl. dam.; corners worn; paper over covers sl. rubbed.

= One of several transcripts of Michielse's famous (but unpublished) so-called "Burlesque Notulen", humorous notes written while attending the often boring meetings of the Staten van Zeeland. Written in a neat hand. The work starts off with the lines "Zoodra d'Eerst Eede was gekoomen, heeft men terstond een boo vernomen, Die zeij dat men op Zaterdag, de Staaten te gemoete zag (...)", instead of the usual couplet: "Ik schrijf een koddig Rijm, voor al die 't willen Lesen, Wat dat de Wereld is of watse Schijnt te Wesen, Hoe alle Soort van Volk word bij de Neus Geleijt/ Door Eijgen Baat, en List, tot Slaafsche Dienstbaarheyt." Usually the works begins at 13 January, but perhaps in this case the date of 13 June is a mistake by the copyist. Numerous local events, disputes, intrigues etc. are elaborated upon. On Michielse see Nagtglas III, p.170-172.
