= Scheepers I, 545. "Weyermans werk is een merkwaardige combinatie van geleerdheid, anekdotes, dodengesprekken, verhalen, preken, brieven en wat al niet. (...) In eerste instantie lijkt het een echt historisch werk, het resultaat van echt geschiedkundig onderzoek, geschreven door een echte geleerde: als het ware een soort Decline and Fall of the Popes. (...) Naarmate zijn werk vorderde, begon in Weyerman de schrijver de overhand te krijgen op de historicus, en werden zijn satirisch-apologetische bedoelingen duidelijker. Steeds meer komen er verhalen voor, waarin hij op smakelijke wijze mallotige gebruiken bij de katholieken uit de doeken doet." (A.
