The second part of the book is dedicated to the early Dutch voyages, i.a. of Cornelis de Houtman to the East Indies. Rare. SEE ILLUSTRATION PLATE CXV.

Hill 1311: "Entering what has since been called Parry or Viscount Melville Sound in September, he [Parry] reached longitude 110° West, thereby earning a reward of £5,000 that was offered by Parliament to the first ship's company that should attain that meridian". "In northern Hudson Bay, Parry sailed north of Southampton Island instead of south, the route preferred by previous navigators, thus becoming the first to sail to the Frozen Strait. He then confirmed Middleton's discovery of Repulse Bay. In late August, having found no passage through Repulse Bay, he explored the coast of Melville Peninsula north and named, among other features, Haviland Bay, Bushnan and Vansittart islands, Gore Bay, and Lyon and Hoppner inlets." = Nissen, ZBI 799 (French ed.). Petrus Camper (1722-1789), anatomist and naturalist, was educated at the university of Leyden, and graduated in philosophy and medicine in 1746. He was professor of medicine, anatomy and surgery at the universities of Franeker, Groningen and Amsterdam.
