= Very rare (prize?)binding of the The Hague section of the Fundatie van Renswoude, a foundation that was founded in 1754, originally with the purpose of financially supporting young promising orphans, but now providing financial support to talented students from The Netherlands and Surinam. Although our copy does not contain a prize, it is typically the type of boek that would be presented to a talented schoolboy of humble means, for whom this first Dutch edition of Lulofs' "Introductio ad cognitionem atque usum utriusque globi" (Leyden, 1743), would be very useful. Bierens de Haan 2923; Cat. NHSM, p.7; Poggendorff I, p.1518. Lulofs lectured mathematics, astronomy and philosophy at Leyden university. SEE ILLUSTRATION PLATE LXXXVIII.

Account of the third centennial celebration in Haarlem of the invention of printing, with plates representing the statue of Coster, his house and six medals commemorating him. First 12 pages with commented bibliography of works relating to the invention of printing. On the 'Jubilee Year Bindery' (act. ±1727-1742) and this binding, cf. Storm van Leeuwen vol. Wall. 19519; Arents III, 604: "(...) Cohausen sought to demolish forever the custom of snuffing, through the most vitriolic attack published to that date." Johann Heinrich Cohausen (1665-1750) was born at Hildesheim, became a doctor of medicine in 1669 and the Bishop of Munster's physician in 1717 (...) = Sumptuously illustrated dictionary. Zischka p.31, listing the original French edition published in 1722-1728; Poortman II, p.169-171: "Calmet's Naam- en Woordboek is geen prentbijbel maar een woordenboek met prenten. Het zijn geen prenten die de bijbelse geschiedenis afbeelden, maar de zeden en gewoonten der Joden, de godsdienstplechtigheden, de tabernakel, de tempels enz." The plates illustrate the history and culture of the Jews: ceremonies, costumes, plans and views of synagogues and other buildings, views of Jerusalem etc. This second part contains letters M-Z, a timetable of the biblical history, a Jewish almanac, a chapter on coins and their values (converted to 18th century currency), and a chapter containing the transcription and literal translation of Hebrew and Greek biblical terms.

= First binding originally used for vol.12 of Blaeu's Grand Atlas (1667, Van der Krogt/ Koeman II, p.381): second binding originally used for vol.5 of Jansonius' Nouvel Atlas (1657, Van der Krogt/ Koeman I, p.341); third binding originally used for Mercator's and Hondius' Atlas minor (1608/ 1613?).
