4495 - 4596 FINE ARTS - PHOTOGRAPHS
- Board mounts some occas. foxing (not affecting photographs). Backstrip of album loosening.
= Rare, unpublished photographs of the World exhibition that took place in Amsterdam in 1895. Most photographs show scenes in "Oud-Holland", a small town in 17th cent. style behind the Rijksmuseum, specially built for the World exhibition. The town i.a. comprised a canal, a courtyard and a market square. The reconstructed houses of the town mainly contained food and drinkfacilities, shops with so-called traditional trinkets and acts. Provenance: the collection of Ruud J. Kijzer (1840-1904). SEE ILLUSTRATION PLATE XLVIII.
- Verso remains of former mounting and soiling.
- Laid down on board; sl. soiled, mostly in lower part.
AND ±20 others, i.a. albumen views of Brussels, Switzerland and Nice. - ADDED: 9 photogr. panoramic views of Amsterdam (i.a. of Stationsplein and Damrak) and The Hague (partly intended as picture postcards, i.a. publ. by J. Nuss).
= Posthumous reprint of the 1964 photograph.

WITH (in the same album) 25 cartes-de-visite of painted portraits, mainly of painters and poets.
- Lacks a few photographs and lacks 1 clasp and catch; a few of the early cartes-de-visite are photographs of painted portraits.
= Interesting album, not in the least because of an apparent link with the 19th cent. explorer Alexandrine Tinne. Two empty leaves have a caption in pencil of "freule Tinne" and "Freule Tinne en Moeder". Besides, the album contains a few loosely inserted (newspaper) clippings and a typescript letter, all dating from approx. 1969 and concerning the commemorative exhibition on Alexandrine Tinne held at the Municipal Archive of The Hague in 1969. The typescript letter was written by mr. Haye Mensonides, the municipal archivist of The Hague from 1953-1977, and is addressed to Mrs P.E. Littooy-Beck. In it he thanks her for the permission to use her portrait album for the exhibition. It is not clear what has happened to the two Tinne cartes-de-visite that are absent from the album.
