Na de Javanen bevolken de Chinezen met hun eigen cultuur voor een belangrijk deel Batavia. Volgens Olivier heeft men in Europa een verkeerde voorstelling van Javanen. Ze zijn beslist niet zo heidens en barbaars als men wel denkt (...). Beschrijvingen over de binnenlanden van Java, Soerabaja, het eiland Madoera, de Preanger-regentschappen en de vorstenlanden wisselen elkaar af. Zelfs een hoofdstuk over de Java-oorlog (1825-1830) tegen Prins Dipo Negoro ontbreekt niet.
